  • Design and Analysis Engineering

Terraocean is an experienced Balance of Plant (BoP) Operations and Maintenance contractor, while the company’s capabilities combine to provide a unique moorings design, procurement, installation, tow and hook-up service to the Floating Offshore Wind sector.

Terraocean is a Rigmar Group company, headquartered in Aberdeen, with further UK offices in Middlesbrough and Great Yarmouth, together with international offices in the USA, Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Australia.

Surveys

Terraocean carries out surveys to support the design, construction and maintenance of renewables infrastructure, both on and offshore.

Operating from dedicated survey vessels, seabed surveys using multibeam echo sounders, sidescan sonar, seabed profilers and gradiometers are used to map the seabed topography and sub-seabed geology, and to chart boulders, debris, suspected UXO and any other hazards that might hinder construction.  The vessels are equipped with ROVs to carry out target investigation and surveys in deeper water.

Mapping is extended to the landfall and beyond, carried out using UAV*-mounted LiDAR and photogrammetry to survey the cable route to the substation and the same techniques are used to map locations for onshore wind farms.

Data is collated and presented to assist with planning the layout of the wind farm and acts as the baseline for all future survey work.  Terraocean offers data management on a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform to support operators throughout the wind farm’s life cycle.

Laser scanning surveys create a 3-D image of a structure or building to provide a basis for modifications and upgrades, while also providing a means of confirming that construction work has been carried out in accordance with design drawings.

Construction Support

Terraocean provides a comprehensive range of services to support installation contractors.

Prior to foundation installation and cable laying, we carry out surveys to confirm the topography and that the installation site is clear of debris, deploying drones equipped with LiDAR on shore and vessel-based multi-beam echosounder, sidescan sonar and ROVs offshore.

The ROV Survey vessel is deployed to support cable laying, performing as-laid and post-lay surveys and assisting jack-up installation vessel with leg penetration surveys, while experienced personnel and state-of-the-art equipment on board installation vessels ensure accurate positioning.

Above water, our inspection and maintenance teams support the wind farm operator and main contractors with rope access, scaffolding, rigging, electrical, mechanical and bolt tensioning services, together with remedial painting, deploying teams of highly motivated, multi-disciplined personnel.

The company’s engineering team supports construction activities with sea-fastening design, transportation analysis, jack-up leg penetration analysis and moorings design, while our Marine Superintendent and Warranty Surveyors are internationally experienced in overseeing loading out structures for transportation.

Balance of Plant

Terraocean is an experienced Balance of Plant (BoP) Operations and Maintenance contractor, and currently provides above and below-water services on multiple wind farms in the United Kingdom.

Above water structural General Visual Inspection (GVI) is carried out using Unmanned Arial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with high-definition cameras.  Inspection technicians utilise rope access techniques to carry out Close Visual Inspection, together with electrical and coatings inspections.

The company also carries out Blade Inspection and Repairs and Statutory Equipment Inspections, and in the event that the inspection work identifies issues requiring attention, Terraocean also carries out coatings, electrical, and structural repairs and bolt tensioning.

Terraocean’s integrated cable survey and below water structure inspection spread features the powerful and sophisticated Valor ROV.  As well as visual inspection, the ROV is equipped with probes to measure marine growth and the performance of the cathodic protection system.

Below water activities also include inspecting the cable protection system, measuring and monitoring the effects of scouring and surveying the seabed around the turbines prior to the arrival of jack-up maintenance vessel. Scour mitigation and protection such as gravel bags may be deployed and surveyed, while the ROV can also be equipped for marine growth removal.

We are an ISO 17020 Accredited Company
